Biking the Roads of the Inca Empire
Located in Peru's spectacular Andes mountain range, Guias Don Bosco en los Andes (Don Bosco Guides School in the Andes) trains disadvantaged, local youth to serve as guides for adventure travelers. The innnovative program spurs economic development and awareness of the youths' cultural heritage, tracing routes created by the Inca civilization centuries ago.
Bianchi recently donated some of its acclaimed mountain bikes to support Guias Don Bosco en los Andes. in thanks, program staff replied by sending the following letter and photos.
Dear Sirs at Bianchi:
Today, as if by magic, at the Don Bosco Guides School in the Andes, at Marcará, Peru, the bicycles arrived, which you have most kindly donated to the pupils at the Escuela de las Guias don Bosco en los Andes. We felt great excitement and emotion, especially for seeing that even today companies still exist which are willing and available to help these poor people to one day become guides in the Andes. They are the children of poor campesinos who today, with this help, work on their land, on their mountains, without having to migrate to Lima to look for a job which they would never find, thus running the risk of losing their noble Andean traditions.
Up until now we have gone in the mountains on foot or using bikes acquired by luck. Almost all without shock absorbers.
You can imagine how these youngsters started with the MTB: more for passion, true passion, that which is born from the simple desire for adventure and social liberation, that desire that has pushed us, during these years, to go along the Cordillera Blanca's routes using mountain bikes.
I could never have imagined that one day, passing through Treviglio and getting to know you all personally, then you would have helped us so much by sending some magnificent bicycles and all that is needed for the offroad.
All we have to do now is use these bikes and send you some photos, demonstrating the value and beauty of the nature of the Cordillera Blanca, that will also be visible for you at Bianchi in the photos.
I cannot thank enough the staff at Bianchi in Treviglio who have made this dream come true..hoping that it is only the first step of a lengthy collaboration with the Cordillera Blanca mountains and the young guides at the Don Bosco school in the Andes at Marcará Peru, who thank you immensely.
Warmest greetings,
