Team Jayco Skin's Matthews Claims His Second Stage Win in Tour de Langkawi
Australian Michael Matthews has notched up a second stage win for Team Jayco Skins and Bianchi in Malaysia's Tour de Langkawi
The 145.6km third stage took the race south from Dataran Pekan down the east coast of the Malay Peninsula to the finish at the Mersing ferry terminal where the 19 year old Michael Matthews won the bunch sprint ahead of American Alex Candelario (Kelly Benefit Strategies) with Ukrainian Dmytro Grabovsky (ISD-Neri) third.
"It actually turned out to be a pretty easy sprint," said Matthews. "There was a U-turn at a kilometer to go and I was fourth or fifth wheel into that".
"Then a Footon-Servetto rider launched down the left hand side of road and I jumped on his wheel," he explained. "I think he thought he was leading out his teammate and he took me to 300m to go before he realized it was me and I just went on with from there."
The shorter stage prompted a flurry of attacks which set a cracking average speed for the stage of 44.47km/h.
"Jayco Skins was going great today and rode really well for me. Five kilometers from home I was in good position and then I just sat on some other guys and rolled them at the finish."
"The overall isn't really in the plan, we're targeting stage wins but Brian (Stephens - Team Director), told me I was up there on the points jersey so that's also on the list now," explained Matthews.
